Howard County Basketball: Dec. 5 Preview and Predictions

Inclement weather forced the cancellation of several boys basketball games across Howard County last week, leaving teams and fans eager to finally get back to action. After an unexpected pause to open the season, anticipation is even higher as squads prepare to return to the court and begin establishing early momentum in what promises to be an exciting winter.

With fresh legs, renewed focus, and plenty of storylines to follow, this week’s matchups offer the first real opportunity for teams to show who they are and where they’re headed. From season openers to early tests on the road, fans should expect high energy and competitive basketball as Howard County teams look to kick their seasons into gear.

Let’s dive into this weekend’s matchups and predict the winners.

Peru (0-1) vs Kokomo (1-0)

Kokomo opened a new era under head coach Drew Schauss with an impressive win over rival Western, as the Wildkats’ athleticism and size proved too much to handle in the season opener. Kokomo looks to build on that momentum Friday when it welcomes Peru to Memorial Gymnasium.

Peru enters the matchup still searching for its first win after a 66–53 loss to Logansport in its season opener, a game in which the Tigers shot just 41 percent from the field. While Peru aims to improve offensively, slowing Kokomo’s balanced attack will be a challenge. The Wildkats scored 80 points in last year’s meeting against the Tigers, and with their depth and scoring versatility, another high-output night could be in store.

Winner: Kokomo

Marion (1-0) vs Western (0-1)

Western opened its season with a lopsided loss to rival Kokomo. The Panthers were led by Carter Biggs, who scored 26 points, but struggled to find consistent secondary scoring. Western will look to bounce back in its home opener against Marion.

Marion began the season with a 75–52 win over Mississinewa, highlighted by a dominant second half that saw the Giants score 48 points. While Western continues to search for offensive consistency in front of its home crowd, Marion’s pace and scoring depth could prove difficult to slow down.

Winner: Marion

Maconaquah (0-0) vs Northwestern (0-0)

Northwestern will be the final Howard County team to tip off its 2025–26 season after weekend snowfall postponed the Tigers’ opener by a week. The delay only adds to the anticipation as Northwestern finally takes the court Friday against Maconaquah.

Maconaquah enters the matchup on the second night of a back-to-back after facing Eastern (Greentown) on Thursday. The Braves are working to replace 70 points per game from last season’s squad that advanced to the Class 3A North Semi-State, and that transition continues early this winter. Northwestern faces similar challenges after graduating key seniors of its own. With both teams searching for new contributors, the Tigers’ home-court advantage could play a pivotal role in whether their supporting cast rises to the occasion in the season opener.

Winner: Maconaquah

Taylor (0-1) vs Northfield (0-2

Taylor is eager to return to the court following a 56–49 loss to Frankton. The Titans struggled shooting the ball, finishing at 40% from the field, and will look for a more efficient offensive showing as they travel to Northfield on Friday.

Northfield enters the matchup still searching for its first win of the season. The Norsemen’s offense has sputtered early, averaging just 32 points per game, which could present an opportunity for Taylor’s defense. Titans coach Fonso White is seeking his first win at the helm, and improved shooting combined with Northfield’s offensive struggles could set the stage for that milestone on Friday night.

Winner: Taylor

This weekend’s matchups offer another great opportunity for fans across Howard County to support local teams as the boys basketball season continues to take shape. Early-season games are all about building confidence, developing chemistry, and setting the tone for what’s ahead, and the energy from the stands can make a real difference for these athletes as they compete.

The Kokomo Post Sports team will be on site Friday night for the Marion vs. Western matchup, bringing live coverage, updates, and highlights throughout the game. Be sure to pack the gym, support your school, and enjoy another night of high school basketball.
