Excitement was high as Indiana University Kokomo’s volleyball team opened the season at home against undefeated Bethel University (Ind.). Ranked No. 8 in the country, the Cougars were ready to showcase their talent inside the Student Activities and Events Center, but Bethel’s experience from three earlier matches helped the Pilots edge Kokomo in a thrilling five-set battle, 3-2.

The first set was a tightly contested affair, but Kokomo went on a 5-0 run with the score tied at 17 to pull ahead and take it 25-20. Bethel, however, showed why they came into the match undefeated, bouncing back in sets two and three with 25-17 and 25-15 wins to take a 2-1 lead. The Cougars refused to go quietly, dominating the fourth set 25-12 behind a hitting percentage of .333 compared to Bethel’s -.152, forcing a decisive fifth set.

The fifth set was a nail-biter from start to finish. Bethel jumped to an early 5-3 lead, but Kokomo rattled off three straight points to take a one-point advantage, forcing a Pilots timeout. Bethel came back with three points of their own to go up 11-9. Kokomo fought back to earn match point at 14-13, but the Pilots closed the final three points to win 19-17, completing the 3-2 victory.

Leading the way for the Cougars were Mya Grigsby with 18 kills and 15 digs, recording a double-double, and Cali Cummings with 14 kills and a team-best .367 hitting percentage. Senior setter Allison Richman finished with 33 assists, and first-year Ava Rundle added 11 digs in her IU Kokomo debut. It was a team effort that showcased the talent and potential of this Cougar squad, even in a loss.

Despite the tough start, there’s plenty of reason for optimism. Kokomo will have another chance to show what they can do at the Onset Invitational on Aug. 22-23, facing (RV) Columbia International, #15 Aquinas, #22 Marian (Ind.), and (RV) Indiana Tech. This tournament will provide more opportunities for the Cougars to build chemistry, develop their new players, and continue their push toward a standout season.
