Kokomo Post 6 Opens 2026 Season With Championship Aspirations

A new summer baseball season is set to begin for Kokomo Post 6 as the program prepares for its 2026 American Legion campaign. The season opener is scheduled for Sunday, June 7, and head coach Nate Hemmerich believes this year's senior team has the talent, experience and depth to compete with some of the state's top programs.

Post 6 will feature a mix of experienced returners and newcomers from across the area, creating a roster that Hemmerich believes is stronger both at the plate and on the mound. With high expectations and a goal of competing for a regional championship and state title, Kokomo enters the summer eager to build on the program's long-standing tradition.

Kokomo Post 6 operates under American Legion Baseball and fields both a 17U junior team and a 19U senior team. The program provides players from Kokomo and surrounding communities an opportunity to continue playing competitive baseball during the summer while keeping costs lower than many travel baseball programs.

In addition to a competitive schedule, the senior team competes in the American Legion postseason, where teams can advance through district and state play with a chance to reach the American Legion World Series, which is played on ESPN. The program also serves as a development pathway, allowing players to gain experience at the junior level before moving up to the senior team.

What stands out most about this year’s Kokomo Post 6 senior team is the balance of experience and new talent coming together in one roster. Head coach Nate Hemmerich said the group features a core of proven returners along with several new players who are expected to contribute right away.

“We have guys who have a ton of experience playing high-level high school baseball and also travel baseball,” Hemmerich said. “I feel we have gotten better on the mound and also at the plate with this year’s roster.”

On the field, Hemmerich believes the biggest improvement comes on both sides of the game. The pitching staff has taken a step forward, while the lineup has added depth and consistency throughout. At the plate, returners like Deagan Kitchel, Teegan Helmle and Trey Beachy are expected to lead the way, while new additions such as Ryan Rodman, Cal Berryman, Eli Roe and Jason Dickinson give the offense more options. On the mound, Micah Rogers and Kaison Hipshear-Walker return as key arms, with newcomers Ashton Castillo and Landen Begley expected to factor into the rotation early.

A key part of Kokomo Post 6’s success each summer comes from the coaching staff working behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly. Head coach Nate Hemmerich said the assistant coaches play a major role in day-to-day operations and player development throughout the season.

“The assistant coaches play a huge role in helping me run the game-day operations smoothly,” Hemmerich said. “Troy Beachy is another pitching guy and Shawn Mayfield works with the hitters. They help me tremendously throughout the season. The junior team helps prepare the kids for play at the senior level.”

That structure allows Post 6 to maintain consistency across both its junior and senior programs, giving players a clearer path of development while keeping practices and game preparation organized throughout the summer.

For Kokomo Post 6, the goals for the 2026 season are clear as the program looks to compete for championships at both the regional and state level. Head coach Nate Hemmerich set the tone for the summer, pointing directly to the program’s long-term standard and what this year’s group is chasing.

“A successful summer to me would be us winning a regional championship and following it up with a state title,” Hemmerich said. “Kokomo hasn’t won a state title in a very long time, and I am looking forward to competing for one this summer.”

Kokomo Post 6 will open its 2026 American Legion season Sunday, June 7, with both its senior and junior teams beginning play in doubleheaders. The senior team will host Crawfordsville and Lake Station at CFD Investments Stadium at Highland Park, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.

The junior team will open its season on the road the same day, facing Valparaiso and South Haven in a doubleheader at Valparaiso High School beginning at 11 a.m. Both teams will begin summer competition as Post 6 continues its tradition of developing local talent across its junior and senior programs.

With a blend of experienced returners, impactful newcomers and championship aspirations, Kokomo Post 6 enters the 2026 season with high expectations. As the senior and junior teams begin summer play this weekend, local baseball fans will have plenty of opportunities to follow the program throughout the summer and watch some of the area's top talent take the field at CFD Investments Stadium at Highland Park.
