Western football record prediction
The high school football season is fast approaching, and there’s no better time to start predicting regular-season records for teams across the county.
Every game matters during the regular season, and one result can change the outlook for an entire year. Throughout this series, we'll break down each Howard County team's schedule, predict the outcome of every matchup and project where each team could finish in 2026.
After capturing the Hoosier Conference championship a year ago, Western enters the 2026 season looking to prove last year's success was no fluke. Can the Panthers build on that momentum and put together another winning season? Let's take a closer look at the schedule and see where we think Western will finish when the regular season comes to an end.
Western High School
Head coach: Austin Colby (entering second season at Western; 8-4 at Western, 62-27 overall)
Western enters the 2026 season looking to build on a successful 2025 campaign that saw the Panthers capture the Hoosier Conference championship. The season ended with a loss to Twin Lakes in the sectional championship, but Western returns with expectations of competing for another strong finish in one of the state’s more competitive conferences.
The Panthers will have to replace several key contributors from last season’s team while relying on younger players to take on larger roles. Western will also debut a new turf field in 2026, giving the program an upgraded home surface as it begins another season of high expectations.
Junior Kasyn Messner takes over as the starting quarterback after seeing limited offensive opportunities in 2025. While Messner enters the season with limited experience under center, he made an impact on the defensive side of the ball, finishing seventh on the team with 39 tackles, leading Western with two interceptions and recording nine pass breakups.
Junior Daniel Ousley will also be a key piece for the Panthers on both sides of the ball. Ousley rushed for 224 yards and averaged 6.6 yards per carry last season while leading Western with 89 tackles defensively. He also added an interception and four pass breakups.
With several new contributors stepping into expanded roles, Western will look to prove last season’s conference championship was the start of something bigger while competing for another successful season in 2026.

With a new turf field, several young players stepping into larger roles and a strong conference schedule ahead, the Panthers enter the 2026 season looking to build on last year’s Hoosier Conference championship. Western will have plenty of opportunities to prove it can remain among the top teams in the area.
