It is that time of year again. The sound of whistles and pads colliding signals one thing: football season is here. For players, coaches and fans, this is the stretch we circle on the calendar every year. The long summer workouts are winding down and it is almost time to see teams take the field with fresh energy and brand new goals.
Last week I made the rounds and stopped by all five local football practices. Let me tell you, it just felt good to be back out there. The smell of the grass, the crack of helmets, kids cracking jokes between drills while coaches bark orders. The kind of stuff I have missed since the offseason. The mix of hard work and camaraderie was everywhere.
At Kokomo, Coach Small had his guys locked in on their new offense, and you can already see the pieces coming together. Over at Western, Coach Colby was setting the tone with his trademark intensity, and his players were feeding off it. Northwestern is still carrying that swagger from last year’s run, even with a new man in charge. Eastern? Business as usual. They were calm, steady, and sharp, the way a winning program looks in August. And Taylor? Those kids are grinding. Playing both ways, sweating through the heat, tough as nails.
Some faces were familiar, others brand new, but one thing was clear everywhere I went: the energy is already building. The season has not even kicked off yet, but you can feel it in the air. Football is back.
