Following Western’s 6-2 win over Kokomo in the girls soccer game came the annual meeting between the two schools’ boys teams. Both squads were eager to get underway, hoping to play as much as possible before storms moved in.
The girls game was the first of a doubleheader that drew packed stands and lawn chairs lining the sidelines. Between games, the boys had about five minutes to warm up on the main field, though both teams also used nearby fields to stay loose.
The boys match kicked off as the public-address announcer read the starting lineups, but it didn’t last long. Less than five minutes in, referees halted play because of lightning. The weather quickly worsened, forcing a postponement.
A rescheduled date has not yet been announced.
